Alkali phenolic process, also known as alkaline phenolic resin self-hardening sand process, is a process used for casting.
This process was first developed by the British Borden Company and patented in 1981. It is called the α-Set process.

Principles and features
The core of the alkali phenolic process lies in its hardening mechanism. In the hardening reaction, the base in the resin reacts with the ester to form an alkali metal carbonate and release the alcohol.
At this time, the alkali in the resin is in a reactive state, which can initiate a cross-linking reaction at room temperature, bond the sand particles, and give the molding sand the necessary strength.
Since organic ester participates in the resin hardening reaction as a hardener, its addition amount cannot be simply adjusted to change the hardening rate and demoulding time of self-hardening sand.
Usually, the amount of organic ester added is controlled between 20 and 25% of the resin amount.

It can also improve production efficiency and reduce costs.
