Gear pumps rely on the changes and movement of the working volume created between the pump body and meshing gears to transport or increase pressure. The two gears, the pump body, and the front and rear covers form two enclosed chambers.

As the gears rotate, the volume of the chamber on the disengaged side expands from smaller to larger, creating a vacuum that draws in liquid.

The volume of the chamber on the meshing side decreases from larger to smaller, forcing the liquid into the pipeline.
